Apparently Culpable
They put something in the news on which I need to comment seriously, so I'm listing this as a statement. It's quite a hard task to turn such serious news reports into comedy, as I've been trying to do lately, but I think people need the levity and I enjoy the challenge. Plus it keeps my brain sharp. Whenever I use real names and references, rather than imaginary ones, I'm generally sharing a statement and not a script. There was a shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo today that appears to have been racially motivated. It's awful, and I wonder if certain media people are aware of how they might be reinforcing this kind of behaviour. I have spent the last twenty years experiencing how the media place appearances above all else, in order to win the favour of the public. They made you love musical frauds by making them look like they wrote my songs. They made you love comedy frauds by presenting them as the authors of my blogs. To them appearances transcend everything. Conversely, they let me carry on living my ordinary life because they know it detracts from my image as an outstanding author and songwriter. They know my ordinary image is far less impressive than the glamourous images of all those stars on TV with my music and comedy. The message I get from them could not be more clear to me: image is everything and substance without image is nothing. Okay? And that's just one victim's experience. They don't dare take a census on it. Now, what is the difference between a black shopper and a white shopper? You know the answer: appearance. This crime is the crime of one for whom appearances transcend everything. Where did he get that idea? Does no one in the media see the connection? How ironic to be handed the reports of such a crime from its possible culprits. The only time they say it's wrong to judge by appearances is when something like this happens. My best prayers for all the poor victims. I'm sure they were fine people. |
